By September 11, the French Dyson site and stores had reportedly stopped selling the toothbrush. By September 15, stores in the US, UK, and Singapore had followed suit, effectively halting sales across multiple markets within days of the product's debut.
Dyson's Evasive Response
Liv Thomas, Dyson's head of Beauty Communications, stated the CameraJet has not been recalled. She claimed the device is 'experiencing strong demand globally' and there are 'shortages of supply as we are in the process of scaling up production.'
Thomas stated that Dyson has 'identified a single component issue affecting a small number of early batches' and has 'isolated those batches and are supporting affected customers.' However, Dyson refused to answer questions on where the CameraJet was still on sale worldwide or what the faulty component is.
Experts Suspect Waterproofing Failure
Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, suggested the problem may be a waterproofing issue, possibly due to a tolerance issue or a failure in the adhesive curing process. He noted that making products at scale with the tolerances required to waterproof are hard.
Adam Toner, founder and technical director of Ripcord Designs, stated that water ingress into the internals of the CameraJet could explain issues like not charging, overheating, or failing to start. He suspects the problem could be as benign as a faulty gasket or O-ring.
