Chess.com waxay bishii May ku tirisay beta Gambit, taasoo ah goobteeda ugu horreysa ee lala socdo. Albert Cheng, oo ah sarkaalka koritaanka ee Chess.com, ayaa sheegay in poker-ka loo doortay sababtoo ah wuxuu leeyahay waxbarasho iyo bulsho sida chess-ka.
Cheng wuxuu ballan qaaday inaan waligeed jirin khamaar lacag-dhab ah oo Gambit. Wuxuu yidhi: "Real money is the problem we built Gambit to get away from, the whole industry makes money when beginners lose. We'd rather build a place where people can actually learn.".
Nidaamka Qiimeynta iyo Qorshayaasha Ciyaaraha Cusub
Chess.com waxay samaysay nidaam qiimeyn oo Elo-u eg loogu talagalay Gambit. Waxay qorsheynaysaa inay gasho go, backgammon iyo mahjong, waxayna horumarinaysaa nidaamyo qiimeyn oo la mid ah.
Cheng wuxuu sharxay qiimeynta: "You're not gambling your own hard-earned money necessarily, so the stakes are lower from that standpoint, but you need something to counterbalance it that you care about, and that keeps the ecosystem in play, and keeps the poker that's on Gambit reasonably high-quality.".
AI, Baahida iyo Dhacdada Tooska ah
AI waxay caawisay in Gambit laga bilaabo koox labo-qof ah. Cheng: "I think the biggest advantage that it's provided is essentially being able to read our existing codebase and our design system and apply consistent patterns to how we develop Chess.com over to a different platform and do so quickly.".
Dhacdada ugu horreysa ee Gambit Cup waxay dhacaysaa August 31st 12PM ET / 9AM PT. Danny Rensch iyo Alexandra Botez ayaa ka qayb qaadanaya baahinta tooska ah.
After nearly two decades of dominating online chess, Chess.com quietly launched Gambit, a free poker platform in beta this May, with plans to extend its reach into go, backgammon, and mahjong.
A New Companion Site Built on Familiar Ground
Chess.com's chief growth officer Albert Cheng told The Verge that poker was selected as the first companion site because it shares chess's learning and social elements. The platform will never feature real-money gambling, with Cheng stating, 'Real money is the problem we built Gambit to get away from, the whole industry makes money when beginners lose. We'd rather build a place where people can actually learn.'
Gambit mirrors Chess.com's design, offering bot matches, friend games, tournaments, a review mode, and a learning mode. It even includes Chess.com's bot characters, such as 'Martin,' the lowest-skill bot. Cheng noted that the site uses its own Elo-style rating system to motivate players, saying, 'You're not gambling your own hard-earned money necessarily, so the stakes are lower from that standpoint, but you need something to counterbalance it that you care about, and that keeps the ecosystem in play, and keeps the poker that's on Gambit reasonably high-quality.'
AI-Powered Expansion with a Tiny Team
Cheng revealed that AI helped Chess.com launch Gambit with just a two-person team, primarily for coding tasks. He explained, 'I think the biggest advantage that it's provided is essentially being able to read our existing codebase and our design system and apply consistent patterns to how we develop Chess.com over to a different platform and do so quickly.' The live version of Gambit contains 'zero or close to zero' AI-created assets, which were used only in early prototypes.
Cheng emphasized that AI's best use lies in blending human and machine capabilities, noting, 'Just because code is easier to write doesn't mean that you just let it run on its own, but it certainly is a superpower in getting things off the ground.' Without AI, expanding to new games would have required a larger team or disrupted Chess.com's growth trajectory.
Upcoming Livestream Events and Future Game Plans
Gambit's first livestreamed event, the Gambit Cup, is scheduled for August 31st at 12PM ET / 9AM PT on Twitch and YouTube, featuring Chess.com cofounder Danny Rensch and content creator Alexandra Botez. Cheng is leaning into the community and social side of the platform, following Chess.com's lead in involving content creators more deeply.
Chess.com is now developing Elo-style rating systems for go, backgammon, and mahjong, with Cheng stating that 'development is moving quite rapidly' on these projects. The company's primary business model remains a subscription, though most users play for free, with premium features like unlimited game reviews and puzzles driving paid access.
