Apple is introducing a new camera feature called Reference Image, arriving with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this month, designed to prove that a photo was not altered by artificial intelligence. How the Reference Image System Works
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will only authenticate photos when placed into Reference mode. Once the camera captures signed sensor data, Apple says its Private Cloud Compute will develop it into an unalterable reference image that can be viewed in the Photos app.
Users will be able to compare the reference image with other versions of the photo to see if any edits were made after capture, providing a clear way to verify image integrity.
Apple's Hardware-Based Approach to Image Authentication
Apple is putting a twist on existing methods by building authentication directly into its hardware, distinguishing its strategy from software-only standards like SynthID, C2PA, and Meta's Content Seal.
The company is also letting developers access a Reference Image API across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, which could eventually allow users to inspect these digitally signed photos in third-party applications.
European Union Launch Delay and Software Availability
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup won't come with its Reference Image feature at launch in the European Union, though the company has outlined a clear path for software adoption in the region.
Users in the EU will still be able to develop and view Reference Images in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, ensuring the technology reaches European consumers even if hardware support is delayed.
