Apple has announced that the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 will include four opt-in audio intelligence tools powered by microphone data, including sound recognition, a conversation recap, and a Live Rewind feature that transcribes the last 15 seconds of ambient speech.
Privacy-Centric Design and On-Device Processing
Apple emphasized that these features are built to prioritize privacy, with raw audio being completely inaccessible to operating systems, apps, users, or Apple itself. The company stated that the tools do not create or store audio recordings, and data is processed locally on the device whenever possible to keep sensitive information off the cloud.
The new S11 chips include a special memory-protected space called the Secure Exclave, which is an isolated buffer designed specifically for sensor data. This secure environment allows the watch to hold and process audio data without exposing it to the rest of the operating system.
Siri Recap and Live Rewind Functionality
Siri Recap can be set to run continuously or on a schedule, using a dedicated AI model to detect speech without recording or transcribing data. When a conversation is detected, audio is encrypted and transmitted to the iPhone via secure Bluetooth pairing before being deleted from the watch, then transcribed locally and distilled into a minimal summary.
Live Rewind allows users to request a text transcript of the last 15 seconds of ambient speech by double-pressing the Digital Crown. The watch uses a rolling buffer in the Secure Exclave, and if the paired iPhone is unavailable, the audio is automatically deleted without a successful transfer.
Contextual Data and Safety Measures
To improve summary quality, contextual information such as Now Playing data, calendar entries, and high-level location labels like home or work are sent alongside the distilled transcript. Precise locations and specific points of interest are excluded to protect user privacy.
Apple also highlighted that Siri Recap is designed to remove sensitive information such as financial data, ID numbers, or personal identifiers from summaries. Additionally, the watch produces an audible chime when Live Rewind is initiated, alerting nearby people even if the device is on silent mode.
