Raleigh, North Carolina, stands out as a dark horse with billionaire Tom Dundon, owner of the Carolina Hurricanes and Portland Trail Blazers, pledged to bring baseball to the city. Dundon holds development rights for 80 acres around the Lenovo Center, though the North Carolina state house declined to provide $500 million in public funding. North Carolina is projected to become the seventh-largest state by population by the time an expansion team arrives, with bipartisan support from Gov. Josh Stein and state leaders.
Portland, Oregon, also presents a compelling case with its 3,280,736 combined statistical area and 23rd-ranked media market. In June 2025, Governor Tina Kotek signed a bill earmarking up to $800 million for a baseball stadium, and the Portland Diamond Project signed a letter of intent to buy the 33-acre Zidell Yards site on the Willamette River. The expansion fee is expected in the $2.5 billion range, and all bids must be weighed against this substantial cost.
