Wrexham earned their first win of the Sky Bet Championship season with a 3-0 victory over Millwall at The New Den on Wednesday 2 September 2026, as Kieffer Moore and Jacques Ekomie scored to lift the Red Dragons into the top half of the table.
Clinical finishing seals Wrexham's campaign start
Wrexham got their first win of the Championship season in style as Millwall were swept aside 3-0 at the New Den. The opening goal came in the 28th minute when Kieffer Moore played a through ball to Issa Kabore, whose strike hit defender Zak Sturge and spun out of the reach of goalkeeper Max Crocombe. The second goal arrived a minute later as Moore picked up the ball 20 yards out and sent a perfectly placed drive into the bottom corner.
The third goal was scored by substitute Danny Imray's assist to Jacques Ekomie, who swept a finish into the corner after being played in near the penalty spot. This was Wrexham's biggest margin of victory since returning to the second tier just over a year ago, as home supporters began to stream out of the stadium.
Millwall's defence crumbles after Southampton defeat
Millwall's Alex Neil described the night as disappointing, noting that his side had to change their shape because of a lack of wide players. After starting with two clean sheets in victories over Bristol City and Norwich, it is now eight goals conceded in two games after Wrexham put them to the sword with some clinical finishing.
The home side carried little threat in the first half, with Mark Sykes drilling an effort narrowly wide of the post after 11 minutes and Max Cleworth's header from a deep Matty James free-kick sailing harmlessly wide. Lewis O'Brien was guilty of a dreadful miss at the start of the second half, leaning back and scooping the ball over the crossbar after being played in eight yards out by Moore.
Managers reflect on contrasting performances
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: 'I am pleased to get the first win of the season. I felt it was deserved. I am pleased with the response after getting beaten by Birmingham.' He added: 'Coming to Millwall is one of the hardest grounds to come to. It's about quietening the crowd and trying to get an element of control in the game.'
Alex Neil said: 'I didn't think it was a great game of football. In the first half I thought the game was in the balance. I thought we gave as good as we got.' He noted that the start of the second half was relatively in the balance again, but it changed when they lost Casper, who was very influential in the game.
