Kyrgios Suspended Over Cocaine Metabolite
Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended since August 4 after testing positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, at an ATP tournament in Majorca in June. Cocaine is banned in competition, and the former Wimbledon finalist is now barred from playing or attending any events while a tribunal reviews his case.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed that Kyrgios may appeal the suspension but has not done so to date. The ban remains in force pending the outcome of the hearing, which will determine the final penalty for the failed test.
Tsitsipas Confirms Prior Knowledge
Speaking after defeating Arthur Fils, Tsitsipas said he had known about the incident before any official announcement was made. He told reporters, 'I don't know what to tell you. I mean, to be entirely honest with you, I knew about this before the announcement. Myself, I knew about it.'
He added that when he saw the news on social media, he felt it was inevitable. 'I knew about all of this before any announcement was made, and when I saw it on social media, I was, like, Here we go. I kind of expected it, to be honest.'
Context of the Doping Incident
The positive test came during an ATP event in Majorca in June, and the substance detected was benzoylecgonine, which is a known metabolite of cocaine. Under tennis anti-doping rules, cocaine is strictly prohibited in competition, and any confirmed violation can lead to suspension.
Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist, has been under a provisional suspension since August 4. The ITIA has stated that he retains the right to appeal the decision, though he has not yet exercised that option.
