The Italian Grand Prix at Monza has been officially designated a heat-hazard race, with ambient temperatures forecast to reach the mid-30C range this weekend. In a separate tribute, Ferrari will run a special livery on its SF-26 cars to honour Michael Schumacher's debut season with the team 30 years ago.
Extreme Heat Triggers Safety Designation
The FIA has classified the Italian Grand Prix as a heat-hazard event, meaning temperatures are expected to exceed 31C at some point during Sunday's race. Ambient conditions around Monza are projected to sit in the mid-30C range throughout the weekend, following a peak of 36C recorded on Wednesday afternoon near Milan's Linate airport.
Drivers are permitted to use a cooling system that circulates glycol through pipes in a fireproof top worn under their overalls, though the kit is not mandatory. Those who opt out must carry 5kg of ballast in their car to negate any thermal advantage, as cockpit temperatures can surpass 40C.
Ferrari Launches Special Schumacher Tribute Livery
To mark the 30th anniversary of Michael Schumacher's debut Ferrari campaign, the team will transform the liveries of Lewis Hamilton's and Charles Leclerc's SF-26 cars to resemble the F310 from the 1996 season. The design will be predominantly red with white accents on the wings and black detailing, alongside gold-tinted BBS wheels that recall the magnesium rims used that year.
The car will also feature Schumacher's personal logo, formed by the letters M and S creating the silhouette of a single-seater cockpit, and a graphic on the nose referencing the seven stars on his helmet from his final seasons. Hamilton and Leclerc will wear special racewear and helmets to complement the tribute.
Legendary Drivers Set to Pilot Historic F2002
Rubens Barrichello, Schumacher's teammate during his five consecutive Drivers' Championship-winning seasons from 2000 to 2004, will drive the F2002 at Monza on Saturday. On Sunday, former Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, who idolised Schumacher growing up in Germany, will also take a lap in the historic car.
Schumacher has not appeared in public since sustaining serious brain injuries in a skiing accident in 2013, with his family carefully protecting his privacy and keeping details of his medical condition out of the public eye.
