Seydou Traore has become the first player to attend London's NFL Academy and later be drafted to the NFL, making the Miami Dolphins' 53-man roster with the 180th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
A historic journey from London to the NFL
Traore, now 24, took part in trials as a 16-year-old at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019 before moving to Florida to pursue a college scholarship. He played two seasons at Arkansas State before transferring to Mississippi State, where he sat out a year before putting together two more seasons that caught the eyes of NFL scouts.
The 24-year-old described the draft-day experience as 'everything I expected and more.' Having his mum and his sister there with him meant a lot, he said. 'Being able to reap the rewards of the years of hard work and the years they haven't been able to see me and be around me. As much as it was for me, it was for them.' He added that heading on to that stage was an 'amazing feeling' and that he was 'speechless when I got out there.'
Fresh start in Miami under new leadership
The Dolphins are coming off a disappointing 7-10 season, their second straight losing campaign, which marked the end of Mike McDaniel's era as head coach. New head coach Jeff Hafley, new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, and new quarterback Malik Willis are focused on bringing the team together. Traore said the first thing is connection between the whole team and teammates, noting that when they are in the building, people are trying to get better and connect with teammates.
Traore explained that at the door, you understand once you get in, you are coming in with a purpose. 'Everything outside, you can put on pause for a few hours, but get to know the people you're going to be with the whole day. Because those are the people that are going to have your back on the field.' The Dolphins kick off their season by hosting the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, September 13.
Looking ahead with patience and versatility
Traore understands that tight ends rarely make an instant impact and that fifth-round picks face a fight each and every year to make a team. He said, 'It's such a long process. So you've got to look at the far picture.' In his rookie campaign, his plan is learning, soaking up as much as he can this first year and showing when he does have those chances, showing the ability to make a play. If the play is out there, make it.
He described himself as versatile, not just on the field but as a person as well. 'I adapt pretty well to different stuff. I'm a team player. I am willing to do what I need to do for the team's success. And yeah, I'm an explosive playmaker.' Traore said he has no specific goals or milestones but knows what he can offer to the league now and in the future.
