SEC executive committee chair Donde Plowman declared on Tuesday that the conference will not waver on its prohibition against NFL players returning to college, and that the league is prepared to defend its authority and enforce penalties against violators.
Unified Front Against NFL Return Rule
Plowman told ESPN that the 15 SEC presidents and chancellors are united on the issue, describing the rule as a non-negotiable line in the sand. She emphasized that the conference is a voluntary membership organization where all 16 universities chose to join, and that the rule against playing professional athletes has always been a foundational standard.
The SEC passed strong penalties last week in Birmingham for breaking the NFL-to-college rule, including suspending a coach for half the season, loss of half of the sport's annual budget, and revocation of league voting rights. Plowman stated that commissioner Greg Sankey has the full spectrum of penalties at his disposal and needs to feel he has the authority to use them.
Legal Tensions Over LSU Eligibility
The standoff centers on LSU, where former NFL players Zxavian Harris and Dae'Quan Wright have indicated plans to play for the Tigers but have not been formally added to the roster. If the SEC takes immediate action to punish LSU, it would violate a standing court order issued by a state judge in Louisiana that prohibits the conference from enforcing rules that would keep the players off the field.
A court hearing is scheduled for Thursday in Baton Rouge, where a judge will decide whether to issue a preliminary injunction. Plowman said she has not been in contact with anyone from LSU since the meetings in Birmingham, but noted that LSU officials were present when the penalties were voted on and know the severity of the situation.
Potential Escalation and Legal Pathways
Plowman acknowledged that suspending LSU from the league would be an extraordinary step but confirmed it remains a possibility within the SEC handbook. She expressed hope that parties can come to their senses and avoid something unfortunate for college football, calling the current confusion and chaos sad.
There is speculation that the SEC may follow a similar legal path as the Big 12, which filed a federal first-amendment suit to catalyze an end to the Brendan Sorsby eligibility saga. The 15 presidents and chancellors have been discussing options among themselves on and off Zoom calls, and Plowman said the league is highly engaged and will continue until more information is available.
