Aryna Sabalenka paused her US Open match against Kamilla Rakhimova after a strong cannabis smell drifted onto the court, asking the umpire to intervene before going on to win 6-3 6-4.
Sabalenka Halts Play Over Cannabis Smell at US Open
Sabalenka told umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore that someone was smoking weed and asked for intervention because the smell was so strong. She said she was unsure whether it came from the crowd or outside, as the wind blows it into the stadium. The umpire spoke to an official on her radio and made a smoking gesture before play resumed.
Sabalenka said it was tricky to handle the smell while trying to compete at her best and hoped people would be more aware of it. She is not the first player to complain about the cannabis smell at Flushing Meadows, with Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, and Francesca Jones also noticing it this year. In past years, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev have also raised the issue.
Sabalenka Cruises to Fourth Round
Sabalenka secured a confident 6-3 6-4 victory over Rakhimova on Louis Armstrong Stadium, serving 10 aces to Rakhimova's two and not facing a single break point. The win marked her 16th straight at Flushing Meadows as she chases a fifth Grand Slam singles title and becomes the first woman since Serena Williams in 2012-2014 to complete a hat-trick of US Open titles.
She will face Taylor Townsend in the quarter-finals after the American beat Russian 15th seed Diana Shnaider 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-3. Meanwhile, Karolina Muchova became the highest women's seed to fall so far as the world number seven lost 6-3 7-5 to American 26th seed Emma Navarro in her first tournament since Wimbledon final surgery.
Pegula Battles Through to Fourth Round
Jessica Pegula kept her bid for a first Grand Slam title alive by coming from a set down to beat Leylah Fernandez 1-6 6-4 6-3. She said she was a little lazy to start off and had to dig deep, but was glad to find somewhere in the second set to turn it around. She saved two break points at the start of the deciding set before breaking in the next game.
Pegula will play Romanian 16th seed Sorana Cirstea in the fourth round after she beat Italian 19th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-3 6-3. Elsewhere, Ukrainian 11th seed Marta Kostyuk beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3 6-2 to reach the last-16 and will face Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova next.
