A Comfortable Win for the New London City
London City Lionesses opened their WSL campaign with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Friday at the Copperjax Community Stadium. An own goal from Julia Zigiotti Olme and a second-half flick from Daniëlle van de Donk secured the win for the visitors.
Manchester United struggled throughout the match, with their first shot on target not arriving until the 97th minute. Simi Awujo scored a late consolation goal for the Red Devils, but the result was a clear statement for the new club.
Putellas Pledges More to Come
Putellas told the BBC she was delighted with the result but acknowledged she is still learning in the physical WSL. She said, 'We are so happy. We had a strong beginning so [we're] really, really happy.'
She added that the team would give better and better football to their crowd, stating, 'We are going to give better and better football to our crowd. Very happy to start with three points and we keep moving.'
Manager Maestre Highlights Team Chemistry
London City manager Eder Maestre praised the team's chemistry and the impact of Putellas, saying, 'The biggest impact is the way we played as a team, having everybody connected very well. The chemistry we are building around the players is the most important thing today.'
Maestre also noted the importance of the Spanish support in the stands for their new signings, stating, 'I think having this kind of support is very important because we have a lot of Spanish players and we are trying to create that identity where we consider all the culture that we have in the team.'
