The league's outside law firm concluded that Ballmer knowingly sought to help Leonard obtain off-court income opportunities, while Leonard failed to reimburse the Clippers for personal expenses paid by the team.
Clippers Reject Findings and Plan Arbitration Challenge
The franchise issued a statement vehemently rejecting the NBA's findings, describing the investigation as heavily biased and seeking to justify a predetermined narrative rather than facts and evidence. The team said it would challenge the penalties through every available avenue.
Commissioner Adam Silver set a high standard for fairness and accuracy at the start of the probe, but the Clippers argued the league has not held itself close to that standard in its public announcement.
Leonard Accepts Responsibility and Eyes Return to Raptors
Leonard said he accepted full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within his inner circle and expressed regret for the distraction caused to fans and his family. He stated he entered his contract in good faith with no knowledge of any intent to circumvent the salary cap.
Leonard's trade to the Toronto Raptors has been placed on hold pending the outcome of the investigation, though the Raptors have indicated they still want him to return to the franchise where he won an NBA title in 2019.
