Naomi Osaka reached the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday after defeating Elise Mertens 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in a three-set match at Louis Armstrong Stadium, despite battling an ongoing Achilles issue that forced a medical timeout.
A Frustrating but Decisive Victory
Osaka, 28, took a 4-1 lead in the first set under the lights before Mertens levelled the match to force a decider. The 23rd-seeded Belgian capitalised on several unforced errors by a frustrated Osaka to gain the upper hand in the second set.
After recovering a break late on, Osaka fired a huge ace to take a 6-5 lead in the third set and completed the win with a revved-up forehand, advancing to face No.2 seed Elena Rybakina in the next round.
Achilles Niggle and Medical Timeout
Osaka described the Achilles problem as an ongoing issue she has had since the grass season, saying she is not sure why it has not gone away despite various treatments. She took a medical timeout to address the pain, during which Mertens massaged her leg and gave her Tylenol.
She told reporters: 'I wouldn't say it's a huge injury. I'd say it's this ongoing problem that I've had since the grass season. I don't know why it hasn't gone away. I feel I've done a lot of things in order to make it better, but maybe the time off wasn't enough.'
Apology to Young Fans
Osaka apologised to the children watching the match after she threw her racquet to the floor at one point, saying she was not playing well and it was getting her down. She expressed gratitude for the crowd's energy and her opportunity to compete at her favourite tournament.
She said: 'I didn't play amazing and it was getting me down, sorry about my behaviour, for the little kids watching. This is my favourite tournament. I wanted to play well in front of you. I'm just that glad I have the opportunity to play another match.'
