Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett described his effort in the team's 27-7 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers as the worst version of himself, citing knee swelling that limited him before and during the game.
Garrett Blames Injury for Poor Showing
Garrett, who missed most of training camp due to knee swelling, said he was not 100% healthy going into the match. He admitted his focus was on his own health rather than the opponent, which showed in his play. He said he was not who his team needed him to be.
The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year was traded to Los Angeles this offseason after setting the single-season sack record with the Cleveland Browns. This loss marked his first game without a tackle since Week 11 of the 2024 season and just the fourth of his career.
Rams Struggled to Pressure Purdy
The Rams managed to pressure 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy on only 7 of 36 dropbacks, a 19% rate that was the third-lowest since the start of last season. Garrett recorded just three individual pressures according to ESPN tracking data.
Despite the injury concerns, 49ers left tackle Trent Williams said he could not tell Garrett was not at full strength because he remained difficult to block. Williams noted that no matter what Garrett was going through, he was still not an easy out for any defender.
49ers Praise Offensive Line Performance
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan praised his offensive line for doing an unbelievable job against the Rams' defense. He said the team did not tweak its plan after learning defensive tackle Aaron Donald was not playing.
Shanahan explained that they could not balance the defensive adjustments and had to cheat the ends the same way regardless. He stated that the injury to Donald did not change any part of the game plan for the 49ers.
