Charlie Appleby's Musical Times burst onto the next year's Classic scene with a commanding seven-and-a-half-length win in the Betfred May Hill Stakes at Doncaster, prompting bookmakers to cut her odds to 6/1 for the 1000 Guineas.
A Commanding Display of Class
The 7-4 favourite Musical Times, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, shot clear over a furlong out and the race was effectively over. The daughter of Lope De Vega had already won her first two starts at Newmarket and Yarmouth before arriving at Doncaster for day one of the Leger Festival.
She pulled a yawning seven-and-a-half lengths clear of Scommessa Sicura, who finished second on her debut, a neck behind the winner. Appleby noted that while the filly showed natural pace at home, the ground conditions were slightly slower than usual, but she handled everything faultlessly.
Bookmakers Rush to Back the Guineas Prospect
Paddy Power initially cut Musical Times to 12-1 from 25s for next year's 1000 Guineas, but that did not last long. The firm was forced to make her their 6-1 favourite after her dominant performance, with an intermediate 8-1 price also quickly abandoned.
Appleby expressed delight with the result, saying: 'I don't see why she shouldn't be a Guineas filly. We won this a couple of years ago with Desert Flower, who went on to win the Guineas. Funnily enough I see this filly as more of a Guineas filly than Desert Flower.'
Next Target: The Fillies' Mile
Looking ahead, Appleby confirmed that the next step for Musical Times will be the Fillies' Mile, which he described as 'always our pencil plan since Yarmouth really.' He added that if the ground came up quick at Newmarket in the autumn or spring, it would not worry him given the filly's neat style.
The victory at Doncaster has firmly established Musical Times as a serious contender for next year's Classic, with her pedigree and early form suggesting a bright future in top-class company.
