Patriots quarterback Drake Maye called his three-interception outing 'unacceptable' after New England lost 13-10 to the Seattle Seahawks in their season-opening game on Wednesday night, squandering a late-game chance to tie the score.
A Costly Fourth Quarter for the Patriots
The Seahawks turned Maye's first two interceptions into 10 fourth-quarter points, including a deep ball to Romeo Doubs and a throw over the middle to Pop Douglas on third-and-14. Maye became the second quarterback in the past 25 seasons to throw three interceptions in the fourth quarter of a season opener, with Baker Mayfield being the other.
Maye finished 23 of 33 for 178 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions. He had just one game last season, including playoffs, in which he threw multiple interceptions: Super Bowl LX.
Maye's Self-Criticism and the Game-Sealing Turnover
"I thought we had the game under control," said Maye, who said he lost patience and made decisions that cost the game. "I vow to myself to be better and realize it's a long season. But at the same time, you can't have those. It's unacceptable."
The Patriots advanced to the Seahawks 16-yard line with 26 seconds remaining, but on third-and-5, Maye threw an interception to Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe in the end zone. Maye said he realized receiver Mack Hollins was in the back and did not put enough on the ball to get it out of bounds.
Vrabel Defends Maye Amid Season Uncertainty
Coach Mike Vrabel said the Patriots want to be aggressive, not reckless, in late-game situations. He added, "It's a long season; we're going to hold our head up high. We have nothing but the utmost confidence in him."
Vrabel shared a moment with Maye outside the locker room alongside his family after the game, saying, "He's going to make a lot of plays for us."
