Mary Earps, the 33-year-old England goalkeeper and two-time FIFA goalkeeper of the year, is set to make her return to the Women's Super League with London City Lionesses in Friday's season opener against her former club Manchester United.
A Homecoming at Old Trafford
Earps, who spent five seasons at Manchester United and made more than 100 appearances, described the prospect of facing her former club as 'meant to be'. She recalled the warm reception she received at Old Trafford during last season's Women's Champions League tie with Paris St-Germain, saying it 'meant a great deal to me at that time'.
The 33-year-old, who helped United win their first major trophy in 2024, also reflected on her time at the club, noting that 'United has changed a lot since I left, but I spent five wonderful years there and I made amazing memories'. She added that she 'won an FA Cup and met a lot of incredible people' and believes 'the fans don't change - they are still as hardcore as ever'. Her book, released last November, caused controversy and dominated headlines, yet she still received applause when she faced United with PSG, and a mural of her outside Old Trafford remains.
Why Earps Returned to the WSL
After two years at Paris St-Germain, where she made 22 appearances in the Premiere Ligue last season, Earps returned to England seeking the unique atmosphere of the WSL. She said she was 'grateful for all the amazing love and support that I've had over the years, but it was nice to be away' and praised PSG as 'a great club' where she experienced 'the Parc des Princes, the French food, the Parisian way of life and the language'.
Earps admitted she 'missed the English football culture - the way you feel when you walk into a stadium, the electricity of the crowd, the feeling around women's football in this country'. She explained that she 'knew I was probably going to miss that going away which is why I'm so excited to be back', adding that 'distance makes the heart grow fonder'. She also noted that she is 'an intense person, especially when I'm on the pitch, so it was good for me to be able to take a period of reflection away from the craziness in England'.
Earps' Goals at London City
Earps signed a two-year deal with London City, joining two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas and Spain defender Mapi Leon. She acknowledged that fellow goalkeeper Elene Lete impressed last term and said 'the reality of it is that I've been here a few weeks and I'm trying to earn my place in the team every single day'. She believes Lete 'did a great job last year and it won't be easy between us to see who starts'.
Earps, who announced her international retirement in 2025, said she 'wants to continue to play at the highest level, to win at the highest level for as long as possible and to be a part of something special'. She expressed confidence in London City's ambitions, stating 'I really do believe that London City will go on to do great things for a long time. They want to be the best in class and world-leading'. She concluded that she 'still feels like I've got a lot to give and hopefully there's some fantastic days around the corner'. She also said she 'really do believe that London City will go on'
