Trailing by two at halftime, Mali surged in the third quarter, outscoring Spain 31-19 after a 16-4 run following a 45-44 deficit. Sika Kone, an Atlanta Dream forward in the WNBA, led the charge with 19 points and 10 rebounds, including two three-pointers during the decisive run.
Kone added another three-pointer in the fourth quarter, helping Mali score the first five points of the period to seal the game. Spain could not close the gap beyond nine points for the remainder of the match.
Germany Dominates Japan
Germany opened with a commanding 28-11 first quarter before Japan, who had beaten Mali 102-97 in their opener, struggled to find rhythm. Japan, which had set a World Cup record with 20 three-pointers the day before, managed just 3-for-27 from beyond the arc.
German star Leonie Fiebich explained the strategy: "We know Japan shoots more 3s than 2s, so we took away the 3. Our goal was to be physical with them." Frieda Buhner and Nyara Sabally led Germany with 19 and 18 points respectively.
Hungary Edges Nigeria in Thriller
Dorka Juhasz delivered a standout performance with 19 points and 16 rebounds as Hungary held off Nigeria 71-67 in a dramatic finish. Nigeria, down 66-52 with 3:57 remaining, cut the deficit to two with three seconds left on Elizabeth Balogun's basket.
Nigeria fouled Reka Lelik with just over a second remaining, and she calmly sank both free throws to seal the win. It marked Hungary's first victory since 1998, when they defeated China in the quarterfinals.
