The Ban and Its Origins
The decision to exclude away supporters from both Glasgow derbies was reached after talks between the two clubs and the SPFL, following the Scottish FA's independent review into the disorder that erupted during the Scottish Cup quarter-final at Ibrox on 8 March. That match, which Celtic won in a penalty shootout, saw around 8,000 visiting Rangers fans present, leading to pitch incursions and widespread unrest from both sets of supporters.
The Scottish FA had previously announced that both clubs must play their next Scottish Cup home games behind closed doors, but the broader ban covers the entire season across the league and cup competitions. The arrangement is designed to give all parties time to consider the review's findings and plan future fixtures with greater certainty, with safety and security remaining the top priority.
A Season of Tit-for-Tat Restrictions
Away fan numbers at Ibrox and Celtic Park had fluctuated wildly between about 800 and zero in a series of retaliatory moves before a compromise was reached for around 5% capacity, or 2,500 to 3,000 fans, for league games in 2025 and 2026. The March cup meeting was the first time Celtic supporters had been granted the full Broomloan Road Stand allocation at Ibrox since away allocations were cut to fewer than 1,000 in 2018.
Rangers had initially proposed a reduced away allocation of just 300 for the Premier Sports Cup tie on 13 September, but Celtic rejected the offer, leading to the blanket ban. The situation has left both clubs and their supporters in a difficult position, with the temporary arrangement intended to provide stability while the underlying issues are addressed.
Reactions from Both Camps
Rangers manager Derek McInnes described the news as disappointing, saying it is always better when opposition fans are allowed into a derby game, and expressed surprise that the decision had been made without further discussion. Celtic manager Martin O'Neill called the decision inevitable and really sad, adding that the fixture is at its best when the ground is absolutely full and away fans are present.
Both managers expressed hope that the two clubs will eventually come together to resolve the particular problems that have plagued the Old Firm rivalry. The SPFL stated that all parties have committed to working constructively during this period, with the aim of ensuring sufficient time is available to plan future fixtures thoroughly and avoid repeated uncertainty around ticketing arrangements.
