Origins of the Dispute
The image of Sayers' penis was posted on his X account on January 8, 2025, while he was in Italy with his then-wife and daughters. The post was quickly deleted but not before it was screenshotted by other social media users, leading Sayers to step down as Carlton president.
Cate Sayers sued her ex-husband for defamation, alleging he provided a statutory declaration to AFL investigators falsely stating she was responsible for accessing the account and publishing the picture. She argued the AFL investigation was inadequate because she was never interviewed and his phone was not forensically examined.
Cate Sayers' Response
Outside court, Cate Sayers said she was pleased with the outcome and had started the legal proceedings to establish the truth. She acknowledged Luke's public apology and described the experience as a painful and difficult chapter that began with extraordinary claims accepted without challenge by powerful institutions.
She expressed gratitude for the support of many women whose reputations had been treated as expendable. Sayers is a former chief executive of PwC and was in charge when the firm was embroiled in a tax scandal after a staff member misused confidential government information.
