Lando Norris has signed a new contract with McLaren extending his stay until at least 2030, but admitted he was presented with other positive options before making his decision in an interview with Martin Brundle ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.
The Easiest Contract of His Career
Norris described the new deal as 'probably the easiest contract I've had to sign', despite acknowledging that other opportunities existed. He said: 'There was opportunity of course. But opportunity that is positive. There's opportunities to gamble at times.'
The 26-year-old added that he would personally 'take one or two tougher years over instant success', echoing the path he followed when he first joined McLaren in 2019. He noted that his dream was always to be with the Woking-based team.
People and Performance Drive the Decision
Norris cited the 'strong' group at McLaren, led by Zak Brown and Andrea Stella, as a key factor. He said: 'A lot of it and a big part of it is the people that I'm with' and 'Just the fact I feel I'm at home and I'm enjoying it.'
He explained that he was happy to be with McLaren even when they were not winning, because he still gets to do the job he loves. He said: 'Not everything to me is about ultimate performance. A good amount of it is also am I just happy?'
Ferrari Question: Ask Me Again in 2030
When asked about potentially joining Ferrari, Norris said: 'That's not something I want to think about for now.' He acknowledged the human desire to experience different teams but said his dream has always been McLaren.
He concluded by saying: 'Ask me again at the end of 2030.' Meanwhile, Norris is in great form, having won the last two races in Hungary and the Netherlands, cutting his deficit to championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 83 points.
