Lewis Hamilton crashed into barriers during final practice at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Kimi Antonelli set the fastest time ahead of qualifying at the new Madring circuit in Madrid.
Hamilton's Crash Halts Session
Just 20 minutes into final practice, Lewis Hamilton outbraked himself at the last corner and hit the barriers head-on at a relatively slow speed. The seven-time world champion reversed out but the front wing dislodged and got stuck under the front right tyre, forcing Ferrari to urge him to stop the car. Hamilton initially wanted to limp back to the pit lane but eventually came to a halt in the middle sector after Anthony Davidson criticised his decision to drive for so long with a damaged car.
The incident triggered a 45-minute red flag while marshals repaired the barriers. The clock was stopped with 15 minutes remaining so drivers could get more laps around the new Madring circuit. Hamilton's crash cost him valuable track time ahead of qualifying, which is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Antonelli Emerges on Top
Kimi Antonelli emerged on top with a blistering time of 1:32.797, beating Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.166 seconds. Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship by 66 points over Mercedes team-mate George Russell, adding to his strong performance at the new Madring circuit. McLaren showed promise with Oscar Piastri in third and Lando Norris in fourth, the latter having missed almost all of second practice on Friday.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fifth and Russell only sixth, but pole position could be anyone's given the drivers are getting faster with every lap and the track is evolving. Haas' Oliver Bearman proved how difficult the Madring is with a big crash in the high-speed Turn 11, leaving his team with a race to get his car fixed for qualifying.
Looking Ahead to Qualifying and Race
Qualifying is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, September 12, 2026, with the race set for 2pm on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Both sessions will be live on Sky Sports F1, with the race build-up starting from 12.30pm. The new Madring circuit continues to challenge drivers, with every lap revealing more grip and speed as the track evolves.
Sky Sports F1's Anthony Davidson warned young drivers about Hamilton's actions, saying, 'Any young driver that is watching this right now, you don't do that. You just don't do that. That's what you could have tried to do [get back to the pits] but that rule is there for a reason.' He added, 'If it [the front wing] went under the car completely and jacked your front wheels up and there were marshals on the track... you've got to think of all these scenarios.'
