LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said Monday he struggled with the decision to continue pursuing former NFL rookies seeking a fifth year of college eligibility, but his players' support ultimately guided his choice as the SEC remains opposed to the move.

Kiffin told reporters that he met with the players' leadership committee and presented the situation before asking them what they wanted regarding the possibility of adding former NFL players. Every one of them was emphatic about bringing them in if they could help the team win, which made Kiffin feel a little better in the struggle of being torn back and forth.

Roster Logistics and Season Start
Kiffin said his final roster is due to the SEC on Friday, the day before LSU opens its season at home against Clemson, and it is too early to predict if any of the late-arriving players will see the field in Week 1. He also said he wouldn't have to make cuts to add the new players under the 105-man roster limit because his Tigers were already under that cap.
Defensive tackle Zxavian Harris and former LSU defensive end Jack Pyburn, who were also released by NFL teams, are among the potential additions. Kiffin emphasized that he does not make decisions on what benefits him personally and that even if it is a couple of players that maybe don't even start, if it makes the team better and it is legal to do, he will take the hit publicly for it.
SEC Opposition and Legal Uncertainty
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian took a strong stance opposing the concept of adding NFL players at the expense of current ones, saying that taking a player off an NFL roster and telling someone who has been doing it for nine months to go kick rocks does not sit well with him. Kiffin said he would follow SEC rules if the ruling is reversed, stating that of course LSU will comply.
A judge signed a show-cause order that requires the SEC and NCAA to explain why the new penalties associated with their pro athlete rules do not put them in contempt of court. The temporary restraining order currently prevents the SEC from imposing stiff penalties that include a half-season suspension for a coach, a fine that matches 50% of the sport's annual budget, and a revocation of league voting rights.
