J.J. Spaun claimed the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday with a commanding 5-under 67, finishing two strokes clear at Wentworth in his first appearance at the European Tour's flagship event.
Spaun's Comeback Victory
Spaun, the 36-year-old Californian and last year's U.S. Open champion, posted a total of 17-under 271 to secure the title. He made four birdies on the final five holes to seal the win, marking his second victory of the year after triumphing at the Texas Open in April.
The 36-year-old said he played with a huge chip on his shoulder after being left off the U.S. Presidents Cup team. He added that he had something to prove this week, but that everything happens for a reason.
Elvira's Collapse and the Field's Struggle
Manuel Elvira tied Spaun for the lead with a 9-foot eagle on the par-5 17th, but he finished with a double bogey on the 18th, shooting a 70. Elvira lamented hitting the wrong shot at the right time on the layup, leaving himself in a fairway bunker.
