Former Australian batsman Mike Hussey has said he is open to joining England as their Test batting coach after an informal approach from new red-ball coach Stephen Fleming, even as the two sides prepare to meet in next year's Ashes series.
Fleming Makes Informal Approach to Hussey
England's new red-ball coach Stephen Fleming has reached out to former Australian great Mike Hussey about a potential Test batting coaching role. The two share a long professional bond, having spent 15 years together as teammates and later as coaches at the Indian Premier League's Chennai Super Kings. Fleming made the approach in an informal manner, describing it as a passing comment to gauge Hussey's interest in the position.
Hussey, who is currently employed as a commentator for Fox Sports, said he has not yet given the offer any serious thought. He expressed genuine enthusiasm for the coaching side of the game and the opportunity to work with different players, but admitted he is still trying to take a break from his current commitments before making a decision.
Ashes Series Sets Up Potential Conflict of Interest
The prospect of Hussey coaching England against Australia in the Ashes series next year has drawn attention, with the tour scheduled to take place in June, July and August. England are looking to win the Ashes urn for the first time since 2015, adding further significance to the potential coaching appointment. Hussey acknowledged that working against his former country would feel a bit weird, given the deep rivalry between the two cricketing nations.
Hussey recalled his previous experience working with England at the T20 World Cup in 2022, where he admitted it felt very strange to pull on the training shirt for the first time. He noted that once you start working in the nets with players, you almost forget what shirt you are wearing, suggesting he could adapt to the situation if he were to accept the role.
England's Coaching Structure Under New Leadership
Stephen Fleming was appointed as England's Test coach in late July, following the sacking of fellow New Zealander Brendon McCullum. McCullum remains in charge of England's white-ball teams, meaning Fleming will focus specifically on the red-ball format. This structural change has opened up the possibility of bringing in experienced overseas coaches to support the team's preparation for the upcoming Ashes series.
Hussey, who recently returned home after coaching Welsh Fire in The Hundred, has indicated he will give the England offer some thought in due course. He emphasised that he has not fully considered anything at this stage and is trying to take a break from his current workload before making a final decision on the matter.
