Hovland and Gerard Lead a Packed Field

Viktor Hovland, the 2023 FedExCup champion, birdied the par-five last to post a second-round 66 and move to 10 under at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. American Ryan Gerard matched him on 10 under after a brilliant up-and-down to close his round with a birdie, having started three back before charging forward with birdies from the third and seventh holes.

Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup posted matching 67s to sit one behind on 9 under, while Cameron Young fired a round-of-the-day 62 to charge from joint-bottom to within two of the lead. Young made five birdies in six holes from the third, including a sensational 40-foot eagle at the par-five last to set the clubhouse target.

Scheffler and Others in a Tight Race

Scottie Scheffler mixed six birdies with three bogeys in his second round to move to eight under, sitting two behind the leaders. He said: 'Yesterday I had a clean card. Today I made a few bogeys. That's pretty much the difference in the score.' English duo Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick are three adrift alongside Ludvig Åberg and Adam Scott.

Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood is six behind on four under, with three-time FedExCup winner Rory McIlroy a further stroke back on three under. Min Woo Lee lost ground with a three-putt triple-bogey at the par-four fifth, while Burns and Woodland briefly made it a five-way tie after both picking up a shot at the 13th.

Hovland Credits Improved Driving

Hovland followed a key 12-foot par save at the 16th by rolling in from 10 feet at the last to move joint-top of the leaderboard. He told reporters: 'I found something that seems to be going straight, so very happy with that. Last week I drove it awful. The week before, not so great either. It's not like I've changed too much since those last few weeks, but I'm driving it better this week. You've just got to take advantage!'

The Tour Championship is the PGA Tour's season-ending event held at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, broadcast live on Sky Sports Golf. With 19 of the 29-man field separated by just five shots, the race for the FedExCup title remains wide open as the weekend gets underway.
