Court Order Restores Eligibility for IU Players
Judge Kara Krothe of the Monroe Circuit Court issued a temporary restraining order that enjoins the NCAA and its conferences from barring the case's plaintiffs from competing in Division I athletics during the 2026-27 season on the basis that they have already competed in four seasons or did not enter the transfer portal.
The ruling states that the court intends to place plaintiffs in the position they were in at the end of their last college sports season, and that as long as they would have been eligible to continue playing if they had a fifth year of eligibility, they are eligible today.
Daley and Wyatt Return After Big Ten Championship
Stephen Daley, a fifth-year senior from Winchester, Virginia, recorded 19 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 35 tackles and two forced fumbles last season, finishing third in the FBS for tackles for loss. He sustained a knee injury during celebrations after the Hoosiers' 13-10 Big Ten championship victory over Ohio State and missed three College Football Playoff games.
Kellan Wyatt, a senior from Glen Burnie, Maryland, posted 28 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 2025 before suffering a knee injury in a 38-13 win against Michigan State. Wyatt has started 35 games in his career and had previously returned to the Hoosiers in early August before his status was in limbo.
Broader Case Includes Multiple Athletes and Institutions
Other plaintiffs in the case include Miami forward Malik Reneau, who averaged 18.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season, an Indiana women's volleyball player, a Butler men's basketball player and two IU swimmers. A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11 to further consider the motion.
The NCAA's Division I board of directors decided in June that the new rules would not apply to outgoing seniors, citing concerns that an influx of unexpected veterans returning to campus would unfairly take opportunities away from incoming freshmen who had already signed with their new schools before the rule change was made.
