UEFA has handed out bans and fines to Fenerbahce players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood following a violent tunnel melee after their Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.
Bans and Fines Issued
Matteo Guendouzi received a four-match European ban with two matches suspended and was fined 50,000 euros for his part in the brawl. Mason Greenwood was given a one-match suspended ban and fined 30,000 euros for his involvement in the incident.
Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira was handed a five-match ban with two matches suspended for what UEFA described as serious assault. Both clubs were fined 50,000 euros for their teams violating the general and basic rules of conduct.
Match Context and Escalation
Fenerbahce won the Champions League play-off against Lyon with a 3-2 aggregate victory, sending them through to the league stage. Guendouzi appeared to taunt sections of the French home support following the victory and team-mates ushered him away as tempers flared.
After the scuffle at full-time, Guendouzi was seen shouting Allez lOM towards a pitchside camera, referencing Marseille. Video circulating on social media showed an individual wearing a Lyon kit confronting the France midfielder as he made his way towards the tunnel, with security staff and members of both teams getting involved.
Player Reactions and Club Response
Guendouzi said he felt disrespected by Lyon fans who were taunting him with insults about his family. He added: When you have 60,000 people insulting your family, your mother, your children, even before the game and no-one on the referee side tells the crowd to be quiet.
Fenerbahce stated: Our club is evaluating the decisions and reasoning behind them issued by UEFA through our legal departments, and will pursue the necessary arbitration and appeal processes to the UEFA appeals committee against the penalties imposed.
