Glasgow's 2026 Commonwealth Games delivered 674 medals and an atmosphere of joy, yet questions about the event's future remain as India's Ahmedabad prepares to host the 100th anniversary edition in 2030.
A Successful but Challenging Edition
Glasgow hosted the 2026 Commonwealth Games for 11 days, awarding 674 medals to athletes from across the Commonwealth. While ticket sales of 434,000 fell short of Birmingham's 1.5 million in 2022, the event was praised for exceeding expectations on the ground. The smaller venues were designed for this scaled-back edition, and fans were consistently engaged throughout the competition.
Despite the on-ground success, concerns lingered about viewership outside the UK. Social media views surpassed Birmingham's within the opening days, and record-breaking television figures were recorded in Australia and New Zealand, where the Games were free-to-air. However, without equivalent UK coverage, the event at times drifted from mainstream attention.
Athletic Stars and Emerging Talent
Several standout performances defined the Games. Josh Kerr won gold at Scotstoun, Angharad Evans made waves in swimming, and Neil Fachie secured an emotional victory on his return to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Jamaica's netball triumph over Australia was another highlight, while Adam Ramsay-Peaty's bronze medal in the pool drew an emotional reaction.
The event also showcased emerging talent. Eighteen-year-old Jersey swimmer Filip Nowacki emerged as a standout, alongside Welsh gymnast Ruby Evans and Scottish gymnast Reuben Ward. England's Henry Hobbs won two golds and a bronze, while swimmer Faye Rogers brought her Paralympic success to Glasgow before competing in the non-para event.
The Road Ahead for the 2030 Games
Ahmedabad, India, is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which will celebrate the event's 100th anniversary. The main venue will be a 120,000-seater cricket stadium named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the number of sports rising to 17 from 10 in Glasgow. Cricket, shooting, archery, and hockey will be reintroduced, reflecting India's influence on the event's direction.
However, the financial outlook presents challenges. Glasgow's budget was £800m, but Ahmedabad's is almost double Glasgow's £160m. Raghu Iyer, chief executive of the Indian Olympic Association, cautioned that 'I don't think one can give any guarantees' about the event's future. The 2030 Games will be held in October, and the event's relevance as a stepping stone toward India hosting the Olympics remains a key factor.
