Georgia Godwin tore her Achilles two and a half years ago and described a horrible road back. At the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, she helped Australia win gold by 1.1 point in the women's team final, her first big international event since injury.
Team Final Performance
Australia won gold by 1.1 point in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games women's team final. Kate McDonald scored 14.200 on uneven bars and Breanna Scott performed on beam, supporting the team before Godwin's floor exercise score of 13.350 and vault score of 13.550.
Godwin said the routines meant a lot after time away. "So before I started floor, I went to my plans and grounded myself and I was so happy for that to be my first floor routine back at a big international event." Her parents were in the stands to watch the competition.
Recovery and Mental Challenge
Godwin tore her Achilles two and a half years ago and said: "I'm gonna be completely honest, it's been a horrible, horrible road back." She added that her support team was amazing but the mental challenges were the hardest of her life.
She said: "I want to finish this sport on my own terms and I wanted to do one more big event with these amazing girls." Godwin also stated: "I've said it before and I'll say it over and over again, but it takes a village and I'm so lucky to have my special village."
Emotions and Composure
Godwin said: "I'm gonna have no tears left by the end of this." She explained: "My emotions don't come up very often but when they do I'm very good at suppressing them if I've got a job to do." She later calmed herself in a quiet corner.
She said: "I think it's so important to feel your emotions but there's also a time and place, so I took the moment, got myself into a quiet corner and just laid down and tried to calm myself back down and did the job." Today is about reminding her who she is.
