Carragher's Bold Prediction
Speaking to CBS Sports, Jamie Carragher said: 'I just can't see Haaland not scoring 1,000 goals or being the best goalscorer of all time.' He added that he has 'never seen anything like it in terms of goals and numbers' and that Haaland scoring two goals away from home in the Champions League is 'an amazing night' that 'just feels like a normal night.'
Haaland has scored 42 goals in 39 appearances in the Champions League group stage, the most of any player since his first season in the competition in 2019-20. He needs just one more goal to become Manchester City's all-time top Champions League scorer after equalling Sergio Aguero's record of 36 goals, and he has scored 59 goals in 59 Champions League appearances overall.
Merson and Haaland's Own Views
Sky Sports' Paul Merson said: 'He would have to play at the top with top, top players for a long, long time. But he's a machine. A thousand goals? That'll be hard because he's got to stay hungry at the same time. He's been around a while already.' He noted that injuries and the toll of top-level football could be challenges, but if Haaland stays at Manchester City for seven or eight years, 'who knows? He could do it.'
Haaland told Amazon Prime: 'Honestly, we controlled the whole first half. Of course, it's a bit uncomfortable when they come high. But we created a lot of chances. I could have easily had a few more goals.' He also said: 'These are the games we have to win. We had a great start to the season, and in the Champions League, you have to win games. If not, you get all the pressure.'
