A History of Gambling and the Path to Ineligibility
Sorsby's relationship with gambling began at age 18 during his senior year of high school, when he traveled to an Oklahoma casino with friends to play blackjack. Over time, he found himself unable to watch sporting events without wanting to place a bet. He said he gambled throughout his time at Indiana and Cincinnati, and even sent approximately $5,000 to friends to place bets on his behalf after enrolling at Texas Tech.
The documentary reveals that Sorsby placed more than 9,000 wagers totaling at least $90,000 on professional and college sports over four years. This included at least 40 bets involving Indiana football as a freshman in 2022. His actions led the NCAA to deem him permanently ineligible for competition.
The Legal Battle and Departure from Texas Tech
In April, Sorsby entered a gambling addiction treatment program in Arizona. He later obtained an injunction from a Texas judge that would have allowed him to play in 2026 despite his NCAA violations. After receiving the court order on June 8, he returned to the Texas Tech football facility and was welcomed back with applause.
However, within a week, the Big 12 filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Tech on June 15, and the university determined it could no longer fight for Sorsby's eligibility. Coach Joey McGuire told his team that Sorsby did not want to risk Big 12 sanctions that could prevent them from reaching the championship or College Football Playoffs, and that he would step away.
Remorse, Reflection, and the Road Ahead
In a final interview with the documentary production in July, Sorsby said, 'I have a ton of remorse and a ton of regret for the things that I've done in the past.' He also acknowledged the impact on his coaches and teammates, saying, 'Just for my coaches and teammates and those guys, and then all the backlash that we faced -- they're having to face all the scrutiny and backlash as well.'
Sorsby, who will enter the 2027 NFL draft, is currently training in Dallas. He applied to the NFL supplemental draft but was denied by the league, which opted not to hold a draft. The documentary series, 'The Program: Texas Tech,' premieres Friday on Paramount+ and features the first interviews Sorsby has granted since the April revelation of his gambling addiction.
