World number one Aryna Sabalenka stopped play during her third-round match at the US Open after reporting a strong smell of cannabis drifting onto Louis Armstrong Stadium, though she went on to defeat Kamilla Rakhimova 6-3, 6-4.
Sabalenka Alerts Umpire to Cannabis Smell
Sabalenka was serving 30-0 in the third game when she tossed the ball, let it fall, and then approached chair umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore to report the issue. She told the official that someone was smoking weed and asked if anyone minded because the smell was so strong.
She later told reporters she had smelled cannabis at the tournament before but never so strongly during a match, noting she could not tell whether the wind was carrying the odour from the crowd or from outside the stadium.
Sabalenka Wins Match and Deflects Press Questions
Sabalenka won the match 6-3, 6-4 and advanced to the fourth round. During her post-match media conference, she laughed when the cannabis topic resurfaced, saying she was simply asking people not to smoke next to the tennis court and that she did not know the effect of the smell on her performance.
She added that she hoped people would be more aware of the issue and joked that perhaps fans were trying to slow down the match so they could enjoy it more.
USTA and Other Players Address Cannabis Issue
U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Brendan McIntyre said the association could not control what happened off the grounds but remained vigilant in maintaining a smoke-free environment, noting that while recreational cannabis is legal for adults over 21 in New York, smoking is not permitted on tennis centre property.
Sabalenka was not the only player to complain; Nick Kyrgios and Maria Sakkari have also reported the cannabis odour during their matches, and no fans were found smoking or ejected from the grounds.
