At just 19 years and two months old, Orfi surpassed the previous record held by New Zealand's Susan Devoy, who achieved the feat at 20 years and two months in 1984. The Egyptian teenager defeated her fellow countrywoman Hania El Hammamy, 26, in a five-set thriller that saw the scoreline swing back and forth before Orfi sealed the match 3-2 with a 12-10 winner in the fifth game.
The victory in Doha marked Orfi's first-ever Platinum title, her third major tournament win, and her 15th career victory overall. It was a defining moment in a remarkable year for the young star, who has been ranked in the world's top three since last October and is now firmly at the summit of the sport.
A Year of Unprecedented Achievements
Orfi's rise to the top of the world rankings is the latest milestone in an extraordinary year. In May, she became the youngest world champion in squash history at 18 years and 10 months by defeating then world number two Nour El-Sherbini in a five-game final at the World Championships in Egypt.
That earlier triumph made her the first player in history to hold both the world junior and senior PSA championship titles simultaneously. The PSA, the global governing body for professional squash, updated its official rankings on Monday to reflect Orfi's new position as world number one following the Qatar Classic.
Orfi Reflects on the Dream Come True
Following her victory in Doha, Orfi shared her emotions on social media, writing: 'Sweat, tears, heartbreaks, and tons of sacrifices all for this moment.' She described the feeling as 'amazing' and expressed her desire to remain at the top of the sport.
Speaking about her ambitions, Orfi said: 'To become world champion and become world number one in the same year is a dream that I've had since I was very young and I really want to enjoy it. I want to just stay at this level now and keep trying to improve every day. I want to stay on top now that I'm the world number one, and I want to win a lot more titles too.'
