Somalia's Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, H.E. Abdulfatah Kasim Mohamud, hosted the UNDP Resident Representative in Mogadishu to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in media development, strategic communication, public awareness and the promotion of the country's culture and tourism sectors.
High-Level Meeting at the Ministry
The meeting took place at the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism in Mogadishu, where the UNDP Representative was warmly welcomed by the Ministry's Director General, Mr. Abdullahi Hayir Duale. The delegation was given a tour of the National Media facilities and the historic Radio Mogadishu Archive, where they were briefed on ongoing operations and the Ministry's efforts to preserve Somalia's valuable media and cultural heritage.
The Ministry was represented by Director General Abdullahi Hayir Duale, the Director of Strategic Communication and the Director of the Somali National News Agency (SONNA). The UNDP delegation included officials responsible for government relations, political affairs and media, reflecting the breadth of the partnership being explored between the two institutions.
Key Areas of Cooperation Identified
The two sides discussed potential areas of cooperation, including media capacity development, public awareness and communication, media support and voter education, countering misinformation and disinformation, preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE), and promoting Somalia's culture and tourism sectors.
The Minister emphasized the importance of translating the discussions into practical technical cooperation, with clearly defined priorities, an implementation framework and a regular coordination mechanism between the Ministry and UNDP to ensure sustained progress in these critical areas.
Path Forward for Bilateral Partnership
Both sides agreed to continue technical discussions with a view to translating the identified areas of cooperation into concrete programmes and activities that will directly benefit Somalia's media landscape and public communication strategies.
The meeting underscores a shared commitment to building a sustainable partnership that will support the Ministry's priorities in media development, strategic communication, public awareness, culture and tourism, ultimately contributing to Somalia's broader development goals.
