The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has delivered 22 tonnes of medical supplies to Sana'a, Yemen, to replenish critical stockpiles and support hospitals overwhelmed by a surge in war-wounded patients as fighting intensifies across the country.
Urgent Delivery to Replenish Depleted Hospitals
The ICRC distributed the life-saving supplies to priority hospitals and health facilities across Yemen since late July, aiming to ease the pressure on medical institutions grappling with severe shortages. The delivery is part of a broader emergency response to intensifying hostilities that have placed health-care facilities under immense strain nationwide.
Christine Cipolla, ICRC's head of delegation in Yemen, stated that the recent escalation in hostilities has overwhelmed hospitals, which are grappling with critical shortages of medical supplies and an influx of war-wounded patients. She added that this urgent support will help front-line hospitals continue life-saving care to those in desperate need.
Mobile Surgical Team Supports Marib General Hospital
In Marib governorate, an ICRC mobile surgical team has been deployed to Marib General Hospital since 23 August to strengthen emergency response capacity. The team has been working with Yemeni medical staff to perform emergency triage and surgical operations, addressing the critical need for surgical care in the region.
The ICRC has also scaled up its support of the Yemeni Red Crescent Society (YRCS), with more than 50 YRCS ambulances now operational on both sides of the front lines. This expanded effort aims to improve patient transport and access to care in areas where health facilities are under immense strain.
ICRC Remains Neutral and Engages All Parties
The ICRC's mission is purely humanitarian, and it does not take sides in the conflict. Its priority is to alleviate human suffering, protect those affected by the conflict, and ensure that essential services and supplies reach those in need across the country.
The ICRC continues to engage with all parties to the conflict, calling on them to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. In some parts of the country, the ICRC is the only international humanitarian organisation present and active on the ground, highlighting the critical role it plays in delivering aid.
