The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has delivered 22 tonnes of essential medical supplies to Sanaa, Yemen, to replenish depleted stockpiles and support hospitals overwhelmed by a surge in war-wounded patients amid intensifying hostilities across the country.
Emergency Response to Escalating Conflict
The delivery forms part of a broader emergency response to escalating clashes that have placed immense pressure on health facilities nationwide. In the Marib governorate, a mobile surgical team was deployed to the Marib General Hospital from 23 August to strengthen emergency response capacity.
The mobile surgical team has been working alongside Yemeni health staff to conduct triage and emergency surgeries. Beyond the supplies delivered since July, the ICRC is also working to bring additional stockpiles to reinforce emergency response capabilities and ease pressure on frontline health facilities.
Expanded Support to Yemen Red Crescent
The ICRC has also doubled its support to the Yemen Red Crescent, with more than 50 ambulances from the national society now operational on both sides of the frontlines. In some areas of the country, the ICRC is the only international humanitarian organisation present and active on the ground.
Christine Cipolla, head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen, stated that the recent intensification of hostilities has saturated hospitals, which are facing shortages of medical supplies and an influx of war-wounded patients. She added that this urgent support will help frontline hospitals continue providing vital care to those in desperate need.
Humanitarian Mission Remains Neutral
The ICRC maintains its commitment to addressing urgent humanitarian needs in Yemen, though the magnitude of the current crisis could quickly outstrip available response capacity. The organisation continues to engage in dialogue with all parties to the conflict, urging them to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Cipolla emphasised that the ICRC's mission is strictly humanitarian and that it does not take sides in the conflict. The priority remains alleviating human suffering, protecting those affected by conflict, and ensuring essential services and supplies reach those who need them.
