He does not own shares in Suncor Energy or ExxonMobil, the two firms at the center of the lawsuit, but his financial records show holdings in other major oil companies including ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66.
Consumer Watchdog Praises the Decision
The advocacy group Consumer Watchdog argued that Alito's financial interests could allow him to indirectly benefit from a ruling favorable to the oil industry. The group's organizing director, Alexandra Nagy, said the recusal was the right move and one he should have made from the beginning.
Nagy cited the Supreme Court's recently adopted code of ethics, which requires justices to step aside when they or their families have a 'subject matter or controversy' connected to the case.
Billions at Stake in Climate Lawsuit
The case, filed by local officials in Boulder, Colorado, alleges that fossil fuel companies deceived the public about the role of their products in climate change. It is one of dozens of similar lawsuits across the country, with billions of dollars in potential damages.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal from the energy companies, supported by the Trump administration. The firms argue that state courts are not the appropriate venue for addressing the global issue of climate change.
