Muthaiga Golf Club Chairman Dennis Mwirigi confirmed that the board has taken necessary steps to resume activities after the temporary disruption caused by the Kenya Forest Service. Members can now proceed with their scheduled activities as usual, though the underlying land dispute remains unresolved.
The driving range and parking areas were not affected by the KFS takeover, which initially left the Front Nine, covering Holes Two to Nine, inaccessible until the club's management stepped in to facilitate the resumption of operations.
Criticism Over KFS's Use of Force
Prof Karanja, Chairperson of Friends of Karura Forest, urged the agency to pursue dialogue and legal channels instead of deploying dogs, guns and heavy security. He argued that KFS should have first engaged the club's management and clearly explained its claim over the disputed land before taking forceful action.
He questioned whether KFS had adequately demonstrated that the disputed section was forest land or explained how it was allegedly acquired by Muthaiga Golf Club, calling for the agency to identify the specific portion of land it claims belongs to the forest.
Wider Implications for Government Conduct
Prof Karanja warned that confrontational conduct by government agencies could lead members of the public to associate such actions directly with the administration of President William Ruto, saying, 'When government departments behave like this, everybody now starts thinking, oh, it's Ruto's whatever.'
He recalled a previous dispute involving Friends of Karura Forest, where armed personnel were deployed and the group removed from an area before senior government officials intervened, urging KFS to adopt a similar approach of presenting claims and seeking court determination.
