The US-backed Board of Peace presented a 66-project blueprint worth $2.4bn to restart rebuilding in Gaza, yet seven Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on Wednesday, underscoring the gap between diplomatic pledges and on-the-ground reality.
Blueprint and Cost Estimates
The Board of Peace unveiled its reconstruction roadmap at a gathering of its board on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The plan encompasses 66 projects designed to address the extensive damage inflicted on the enclave by Israeli attacks.
According to the Board of Peace, the full cost of rebuilding is expected to reach approximately $35bn over the medium term, with an additional $71.4bn required in the next decade to fully restore the devastated territory.
Conditions and Diplomatic Tensions
Board of Peace high representative Nikolay Mladenov stated that the proposed plan is contingent upon Hamas's disarmament, a process in which Palestinian factions agreed to a framework in July. Trump described the disarmament plan as a monumental step toward peace and security.
Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reported that little progress has been made on the ground, noting that Israel has not fulfilled its commitment to withdraw troops, meaning recovery has yet to begin. Mladenov added that the group is not bound by a calendar but wants to ensure the plan works.
Ongoing Israeli Strikes and International Condemnation
On Wednesday, an Israeli drone attack on a vehicle in al-Mawasi near Khan Younis killed two people, identified as Osama Abu Khater and Mohammad Abu Elwan. Netanyahu claimed the strike killed a senior Hamas finance official, while Al Jazeera's Ibrahim Al Khalili described the situation as going from bad to worse.
Separate strikes in Deir el-Balah and Gaza City killed at least three Palestinians, and additional victims succumbed to wounds from earlier gunfire. Meanwhile, leaders of the UK, France and Canada criticised Israel's settlement policy, and UN chief Guterres called for the UN to be allowed to perform its mandates in Gaza.
