The newspaper reported that Yahya Sinwar, then-Hamas leader, relayed warnings through an intermediary, telling contacts to expect an earthquake. Netanyahu's National Security Council and Military Secretary reviewed his call logs and found no trace of a conversation with bin Zayed.
Political Fallout Ahead of Elections
Israel is holding national elections in October, and Netanyahu's handling of the October 7 crisis is a central campaign issue. Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot accused the prime minister of ignoring dozens of warnings, while rival Naftali Bennett stated Netanyahu bears personal responsibility for the deaths of thousands of Israelis.
Netanyahu blamed Palestinian political figure Muhammad Dahlan for the false report, though Dahlan's representatives rejected the claim. Haaretz maintains it stands by its reporting despite threats of a libel suit from Netanyahu's legal team.
Gaza War Toll and Ceasefire
