The US military struck five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired ballistic missiles at a US Navy warship twice in the preceding days, CENTCOM said. The US warship successfully evaded the attacks and no American personnel were harmed, while CENTCOM ordered crews to abandon the targeted tankers before the strikes.
Ships Attacked and IRGC Linkage
US forces struck four oil carriers in the Gulf of Oman — the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco — and also attacked the M/T Derya near Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM linked all five vessels to the IRGC, saying Iran had used them as part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies.
CENTCOM added that Iran has no means by which to defend these vessels. Iranian media reported explosions were heard near the southern port of Jask and on Kharg Island, both key ports for the country's oil exports.
Iranian Retaliation and Jordan Missile Exchange
Iranian state media reported that Iran carried out a ballistic missile attack on US targets in Jordan. Jordan's army said it shot down 18 of 20 missiles launched toward its territory, with two falling in unpopulated areas. An American official said the Iranian attack had been ineffective and that all US personnel were accounted for.
The IRGC said it also targeted two US ships, eight oil tankers and 10 other non-compliant vessels attempting to pass through the prohibited and unsafe zone in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM dismissed these claims, saying all of Iran's attempted attacks on vessels in the region had failed.
Iran Warns Tankers in Kuwait and Bahrain
Iran's IRGC warned all oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports — whether anchored or docked — to leave their vessels because they will be targeted. The statement came as tensions escalated since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran, during which Tehran has repeatedly targeted US military bases, ships and American allies across the Middle East.
