Iran's top security official Mohsen Rezaei has publicly detailed Tehran's latest demands to end its conflict with the United States in an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, asserting that the country is now more battle-hardened than during the first 40 days of the war.
Iran's Conditions for Peace
Rezaei outlined six key conditions, including an end to hostilities on all fronts, the release of billions of dollars in frozen funds, and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. He also called for an end to US interference in Iran's internal affairs and all US attacks on Iranian territory.
The security chief stated that Iran is prepared for a decisive war and that Washington's threats will not achieve results. He emphasized that it is in the US interest to accept these terms, adding that Tehran is waiting for the Americans to accept and implement them.
The June MoU and Its Aftermath
The conditions bear similarities to the June 17 memorandum of understanding, which included a $300bn reconstruction plan, US waivers for Iranian oil exports, and a commitment to open the Strait of Hormuz. However, the MoU expired last month, and the US unilaterally withdrew from its dispute resolution committee.
Rezaei rejected US accusations that Iran violated the agreement by striking an oil tanker, stating that Iran's actions were a response to US attacks on Bandar Abbas and a surveillance platform there. He noted that any agreement requires recourse to the dispute committee, which Washington abandoned.
Nuclear Stance and Regional Dynamics
On the nuclear programme, Rezaei said Iran could have withdrawn from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but has not done so, while continuing to abide by a fatwa from the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei prohibiting nuclear weapons. He warned that future sanctions or a UN Security Council referral could change the calculus.
Iran denied involvement in the Yemen conflict and dismissed speculation about closing the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, calling it a Yemeni matter. Rezaei also revealed that Tehran came within a short step of announcing a deal with Oman to manage the Strait of Hormuz, though it may require regional endorsement.
