British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has confirmed that the Royal Air Force will offer defensive air-to-air refuelling to Saudi aircraft, marking a new chapter in London's military engagement in the Yemen crisis as Houthi strikes intensify across the region.
London Confirms Limited Military Support
Speaking to reporters on Monday while in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, the British leader said the UK had received a formal request from Saudi Arabia for military assistance. The agreement is expected to begin within days and could extend for several weeks, involving the RAF's Voyager tanker aircraft alongside the Sky Sabre air defence system already stationed in the kingdom.
The mission is explicitly defensive in nature, designed to support Saudi jets in protecting the country from drone and missile attacks rather than backing strikes against the Iran-backed Houthis. Burnham stated he was acting to secure the interests of Britain and the wider region, noting that Saudi Arabia has been experiencing attacks and that keeping oil pathways open is a priority.
Houthi Escalation and Regional Tensions
Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen's internationally recognised government against the Houthis. However, a 2022 truce collapsed in July this year after the rebels allowed an Iranian plane to land in Sanaa, defying Saudi control over Yemeni airspace. On Saturday, a Houthi attack on Riyadh became the first to target the Saudi capital in years, further straining the fragile security situation.
The Houthis have also declared a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea, a crucial global shipping route. Oil facilities within Saudi Arabia, one of the world's top oil exporters, have come under fire from Houthi drones and missiles, raising concerns about energy security and regional stability.
G7 Nations Condemn Houthi Actions
On Monday, the foreign ministers of G7 nations issued a joint statement denouncing Houthi attacks in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia, while urging Iran to end its support, including arming, of the rebels. The ministers expressed their strongest condemnation of the unacceptable continued strikes carried out by the Houthis.
The statement called on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions, all threats and attacks against civilian shipping, and to return to the political process in good faith. The coordinated diplomatic response underscores the growing international concern over the escalating conflict and its broader implications for global security.
