U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in August, a sharp rebound from the 23,000 positions lost in July, as the Federal Reserve considers another interest rate increase amid persistent inflation pressures.
August Jobs Report Beats Expectations
The U.S. labor market showed renewed strength in August, with employers adding 162,000 jobs, far exceeding the 31,000 average gain over the prior 12 months. This marked a significant turnaround from the 23,000 jobs lost in July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%, reflecting a historically low level of joblessness across the country.
Hiring was particularly robust in the restaurant and bar sector, which added 59,000 jobs in August, up from an average of just 12,000 per month over the past year. Manufacturing also continued its steady growth trajectory, contributing to the overall positive momentum in the labor market.
Inflation and Fed Policy Under Scrutiny
The annual inflation rate stands at 3.4% as of July, more than a percentage point above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. This elevated inflation, driven in part by the Iran war's impact on gasoline prices, has pushed central bankers toward considering another rate hike at their September 16 meeting. Investors now peg the odds of a quarter-point increase at approximately 62%, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that the central bank's primary focus should remain on combating inflation, stating that hard-working Americans bear the brunt of economic misjudgments. Despite holding rates steady in July, three of the 12 Fed policymakers voted in favor of a rate hike, signaling internal divisions over the appropriate policy direction.
Economic Resilience Amid Global Uncertainty
The U.S. economy demonstrated resilience in the first half of 2026, averaging 92,000 jobs added per month, a stark contrast to the 7,000 jobs lost monthly during the second half of 2025. This recovery occurred despite a historic oil shock that drove up fuel prices and disrupted supply chains, highlighting the labor market's ability to adapt to external pressures.
Recent weeks have seen renewed economic strain, including a bond selloff and rising oil prices amid ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions. These developments underscore the delicate balance between maintaining economic growth and addressing inflationary pressures that continue to challenge policymakers and consumers alike.
