A musician's chance encounter in 2011 led to marriage, four children and a simpler life on the road

Tom Busby met Huma in Sydney in 2011 after his first national tour with Busby Marou ended there. Huma was from Houston and had lived in Australia four years. They married in 2014 and now travel with four children.

How Tom and Huma first met

Huma met Tom through an Australian friend named Josh who managed Tom's band. Tom wore a blue velvet jacket that night, which he later said was fake: "It was fake [velvet], but I was looking good." They kept contact on Facebook after meeting.

Three or four months later Tom returned to Sydney supporting Pete Murray and invited Huma backstage, though she did not know who Pete Murray was. They dated about a year and a half, then Tom brought her to Rockhampton to meet his family of eight children with roughly 30 nieces and nephews.

Marriage and four children

Tom and Huma got engaged after about a year and a half together and married in 2014. Tom had said he wanted eight kids when they met. They have four children: Winifred, Marigold, Henrietta and Herbert; the eldest is 10 and youngest is four.

Tom never missed the birth of any child despite touring. Huma said of the family: "I felt like I was home from the moment I set foot in that door." The couple value the Busby family warmth that welcomed Huma from her small Texas upbringing.

Life on the road today

The family spent six weeks in America last year for holiday and Tom's album Rockhampton Hangover. Tom played Big Red Bash, Mundi Mundi and Way Out West. Now they travel in a caravan, homeschool the children and hope to return home in one or two years.

Tom said the caravan life shares the load: "We're sharing the job load and the mental load and all of the loads." Huma said their bond is stronger with less tension. They aim for a simpler life and a sustainable career as Tom builds his solo work.
