Toho has released the full IMAX trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, the long-awaited sequel to the 2023 Oscar-winning film Godzilla Minus One, which features a menacing appearance by the three-headed King Ghidorah.
A Sequel Built on the First Film's Legacy
Godzilla Minus One, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, became a global phenomenon in 2023 and earned an Academy Award for best visual effects. The film centered on kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima, who was haunted by survivor's guilt after failing to act when Godzilla struck a Japanese base on Odo Island in 1945.
Kōichi was one of only two survivors of the attack, the other being a mechanic named Tachibana, who was furious at his friend's survival. His parents and many others were killed in the World War II bombing of Tokyo, adding to his personal tragedy.
The Monster Returns, and So Does the Pilot
In the first film, Godzilla re-emerged, and Kōichi resolved to die fighting the monster to atone for Odo Island. Spoiler alert: Kōichi survived, thanks to Tachibana's forgiveness and mechanical ingenuity, and reunited with Noriko, who bore a strange black bruise on her neck.
The film ended with a chunk of Godzilla's remains beginning to regenerate, leaving the door open for a sequel. Now, with the official synopsis for Godzilla Minus Zero available, fans know the story is set to continue this fall.
King Ghidorah Joins the Kaiju Roster
