NDMA confirms rising toll since late June while officials warn of new rainfall midweek
Heavy rains and flooding in Pakistan have killed at least 107 people and injured 344 others since the monsoon began in June, with hundreds of homes damaged. The NDMA reported the toll on Sunday as authorities prepared for further wet weather later this week.
Regional Death Toll and Damage
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded the highest number of deaths at 55, followed by Punjab with 36 fatalities. The NDMA stated that more than half of all deaths were caused by house or roof collapses during the ongoing rain-related incidents.
In Lahore, Punjab's capital and Pakistan's second-largest city, authorities have established at least 17 flood relief camps for evacuated residents. A senior Punjab Irrigation Department official told Dawn the situation was 'very alarming', with around 400sq km under water.
Official Response and River Conditions
The official described the scene: 'The current situation resembles an inland sea because of the vast expanse of floodwater.' Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said on X that responders were deployed and teams were draining floodwaters across the province.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department said no 'flood-generating activity is expected' until Tuesday, but 'a fresh wet spell is likely to commence' from Wednesday. It added the Ravi River is at a 'medium flood level' while most major rivers are normal to low.
Outlook and Vulnerabilities
Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder reported from Punjab that authorities urge residents to avoid low-lying areas. He said cloudbursts brought hundreds of millimetres of rain, inundating Lahore, adding 'All eyes now will be on the rivers.' Disorganised planning has worsened slum flooding risk.
Hyder noted 'This is just the middle of the monsoon season, which is likely to continue until September,' and 'That will keep everybody on their toes.' In 2025, flooding killed 1,037 people and displaced two million, with millions of livestock lost and crops damaged.
