The organisers of next month's Asian Games in Japan have told athletes to make their own arrangements for accommodation after the expected number of competitors exceeded the budgeted capacity of 15,000.
Unexpected Surge in Athlete Numbers
The Asian Games, scheduled to take place in the Nagoya and Aichi region between 19 September and 4 October, were initially expected to host 15,000 athletes and officials. However, the Olympic Council of Asia confirmed last week that the figure would be closer to 17,000 after the inclusion of teqball and padel earlier this year.
Hideaki Omura, president of the organising committee and Governor of Aichi Prefecture, explained that the host city agreement specifies a delegation of 15,000 people and that no additional budget was set aside for the late influx of competitors.
Budget Constraints and Tight Accommodation
Ichiro Hirosawa, mayor of Nagoya and acting chairman of the local organising committee, said it was difficult to accommodate the increased number because the Games is operating on a tight budget. Omura added that the hosts have neither the manpower nor the budget to make the necessary arrangements for the extra athletes.
Unlike the Olympic Games, where a designated athletes' village is provided, organisers have opted for temporary accommodation. Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes will stay on board the Italian cruise ship Costa Serena, while a further 2,000 will use shipping container-style huts.
Athletes Left to Find Their Own Lodging
With no rooms available in the Nagoya and Aichi region, the remaining athletes and officials will be accommodated in hotels in Tokyo, where swimming, diving and equestrian events are scheduled to take place. Omura stated plainly that there is simply nowhere for them to stay and that those who still wish to compete will have to make their own arrangements.
The situation highlights the logistical challenges faced by event organisers when athlete numbers exceed initial projections, particularly when financial constraints limit the ability to secure additional accommodation.
